I will have a booth at the Katy Market Days, in Katy, Texas, on Saturday, August 16, from 10 am to 5 pm. I hope you will stop by if you are in the area. I have note cards of my original watercolor paintings, which make great teacher gifts for Back to School Night! Also, my open edition prints are matted in standard frame sizes, making it a snap to pick out a frame at Hobby Lobby (they will frame it for you while you wait, if it is not a real busy framing day). But wait, there's more! I also have a few framed prints and originals that are ready to hang on your wall or brighten a corner of a bookshelf. Hope to see you there!Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-89915274909547231212014-08-05T17:16:00.000-05:002014-09-01T15:41:36.300-05:00"Sweet Cherries", my demo for the Intro to Watercolor Workshop on Thursday, July 31

Just a quick update on the Summer Boredom Buster: Introduction to Watercolor One Day Workshop last Thursday, July 31. I had a great class of five eager and enthusiastic learners. We started out with the basics:

•how to tear the full sheets of watercolor paper down to quarter sheets for a lovely deckled edge
•how to tape the sheets of paper to the base board (Gatorboard)
•how to mix water and paint on the palette to fully load the brush
•several basic techniques to get the paint onto the paper
•basic wash techniques
•how to use a "thirsty brush" to control the excess water in a painted shape
•glazing

Then I took them step by step through the painting of "Sweet Cherries," while the class painted along. This 5x7 painting utilized the basics that were covered, with emphasis on the "thirsty brush," and how to keep an eye on the bead of paint at the bottom of a painted shape, etc.

Mark your calendar now for Thursday, September 18, 2014. I will be teaching another Introduction to Watercolor One Day Workshop at Katy Contemporary Arts Museum in Katy, Texas. It will build on the same techniques, helping to reinforce those basics to complete another small painting to take home and hang proudly in your home. Stay tuned!
Life got in the way, as they say. So here is my most recent effort. I took a workshop from Iain Stewart at the Watercolor Art Society-Houston a couple of weeks ago, and I really enjoyed learning from him! I love his teaching style (very laid back and FUN!) and his work is just phenomenal. I am feeling revitalized in my art.

This pet portrait commission that I recently completed is of an amazing Chocolate Lab named Mo. He was such a special pet for his family for many years, so after he passed, his owners wanted a really special remembrance of him. The lady of the house was especially close to Mo because he was her constant and faithful companion when the kids were at school and her husband was at work, which included a lot of business travel. I was so happy when she received the portrait last night and she teared up. She said I had captured his image, his personality and the light in his eyes. Mission accomplished.

I used several photos as reference material for this painting. The out-of-doors background was not in the original photo, as it was taken inside their home. Also, the lighting was from a flash, which flattened out his features and changed the color of his eyes. So I really had a challenge making the shadows, highlights and his eye color look more natural. I really enjoyed painting this portrait, and I am very happy with the results!Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-17328198398624996362011-06-06T13:56:00.009-05:002013-03-28T11:29:19.558-05:00Original Watercolor by Becky Brocato "Sticking Close"
We had a great time at the Opening Reception of the Texas Watercolor Society 62nd Annual Exhibit in San Antonio, Texas, this past Saturday evening. It was held at the San Antonio Art League and Museum, which is located at 130 King William Street in the beautiful King William Historic District. I am so pleased and honored that my watercolor painting, "Sticking Close," is included in this Exhibit. A big "thank you" to all who came to the Opening Reception. I truly appreciate your interest in and support of my work! This Exhibit has around 50 beautiful water media paintings by artists from all across the United States, and it will be on display throughout the month of June, so I hope you will make time to go by and see it if you are traveling to San Antonio this month.

On Sunday, before heading back to Houston, we browsed the shops in La Villita Historic Arts Village in Downtown San Antonio. I totally enjoyed meeting and visiting with Ugur Kilic (photographer, graphic designer and web site designer) and Susan Carlin (artist and owner) of Nueva Street Gallery. This is one of my favorite galleries in downtown San Antonio, and they always have a wonderful variety of high quality art pieces from 19 amazing artists. The next time you are in San Antonio, you should definitely stop in.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-22692687019783562592011-05-10T13:10:00.010-05:002011-05-10T13:29:30.335-05:00A watercolor portrait of three sisters<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiR0gEEya6WG2n48wgcBdkTdgVEb0xiaNRqqod5gXVDtPDS0cmElM_DbnIIDvLYU9I4AxMlilbsF0KFdYSY_v44B0xW1RW8Lm7rt9OdDbpLjis7pbpi8gfOGiw-WaHv4CWlOJGqD4Lb73f/s320/Watercolor_3cs_portrait_lores.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605154999159783890" />

©Becky Brocato
"The 3Cs: Carli, Celbi and Cirby" 11" x 14"
Watercolor on 300lb Arches CP

I really loved painting this portrait of three sisters when they were young. This particular hole is in a segment of the course which is known as the Amen Corner. Since 1934, this famous golf club has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf. The painting is now in the collection of an appreciative winner, as it was in the lineup of prizes for the Williams United Way Golf Tournament yesterday at Blackhorse Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

This was a fun painting to create. Lots of color in the azaleas made it a pleasure to paint. The real challenge was getting a variety of greens in the trees and foliage, and I think I achieved that.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-12313973750142441922010-10-15T21:14:00.011-05:002010-10-18T09:59:24.831-05:00Watercolor Commission "Marcus at 9"<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 238px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwbz2PLzsINH09bTuVeeD7XlkBUY5JS9GBX8WPueJIrctYi1VOcHg1DWF64xMbPtUBPII6-hsUnWo6xhB4VNyLoFUlhdwfzlwGYh2_Gi7M6DJD5K8CW2Ig3DKK4FnXJjOIcVIKrXpKw-ak/s320/Marcus+2010_lores.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5528462222062606146" />

©Becky Brocato
"Marcus at 9"
12" x 9"
Watercolor on 300lb Arches

Here is my most recent portrait commission. It is titled "Steve: To a Well-Lived Life." The subject of this painting passed away suddenly several years ago, and it was such a shock to his family. When his sister, Chris, commissioned me to paint a portrait from one of the last photos that was taken of him, I was a bit nervous at first, hoping that I could capture the essence of his personality.

The photo had been taken by a friend while on a vacation to Lake Travis, so it was a fun and relaxed time. I simplified the background to make his image the focal point of the painting. I am happy to say that the client was very pleased with the completed painting. Here is a note from Chris: "...I wish I could express how much joy this project has brought me. I hope for you as an artist, you will find satisfaction and happiness not only in your incredible artistic ability but in how profoundly you will touch the lives of our entire family by bringing this portrait to life."

This is one of the reasons I enjoy doing portrait commissions. It really means something to the person who commissions it. If I've done a good job, it brings them joy. That is indeed fulfilling.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-11175239152107509112010-04-30T16:36:00.006-05:002010-04-30T16:45:26.273-05:00Opening Reception for Visual Arts Alliance Exhibit<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgChe7lEY91loLo6uFZQJEL4tYpZIIyZLQAbOVW4MOg2PYBfCCkILvV2FCPvaj0wjOXDb1CFGKlMW13fzV7dARbbnFob6Nos0oEbVaLhfQunRhR4vsiit-sgweJurMzwY3p3XJ0PCKLqoCd/s320/becky_teamwork.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466048821514685810" />

We had a wonderful evening at the Visual Arts Alliance 27th Open Juried Exhibit at the Williams Tower Gallery. I was really pleased with the way the sunlight was just glowing on this white goose. So fun to paint! And of course, the white of this goose is the white of the paper. This is a transparent watercolor painting.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-2501411477080088002009-10-04T19:32:00.005-05:002010-04-08T12:03:59.057-05:00"Mykonos in May" receives the Jack Richeson Merchandise Award!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQjVrdHW2c3HpREcIEqNQ-tnLZ8h8L3yUrPwHQwFyhot8f8RDvLtnwBMyUc8I_S9aFBxP9j1y-t1f-g3uPiBsoSNKsVfnYjSrEoJIrjJ1c6aPKt2AbHWXCmCZ7jzadkbAnwe9vWw0t2jki/s320/Mykonos+in+May+blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388907882933535186" />

©Becky Brocato
"Mykonos in May"
23.5" x 17.5"
Watercolor on Arches 300 CP

My watercolor painting, "Mykonos in May," has been accepted in the Watercolor Art Society-Houston 40th Annual Members Exhibit. It also received the Jack Richeson Merchandise Award, so I am very pleased that this painting has finally been given a nod of approval from a nationally known juror, Jan Fabian Wallake, author of Watercolor: Pour It On. I hope you will make plans to attend the Opening Reception on Friday, October 9, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the WAS-H Gallery, 1601 West Alabama, Houston TX 77006. Wine and refreshments will be served. Judge Jan Wallake will be giving awards at 6:30 pm. This wonderful show will be on exhibit from Tuesday, October 6 to Friday, November 6, 2009, so if you are unable to attend the opening reception, try to make plans to see the show at some point over the next month. You will not be disappointed, I promise!Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-31707757601119490142009-09-26T09:18:00.008-05:002010-04-08T11:58:16.339-05:00Fall is in the Air<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 286px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUtxly1hiMo1NDNIcVTox3hCeolnVtvV7LcxhTCbyxSKWYAxbhxBUAJM-fv7I689wQzBWhiFROlZeILIg1EoxOU8wke_qUWy6Iw0t4nleodpK3XXSvKF1rrzphMOU6PK1oNdEGtC4QNkqh/s320/mums_lores.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385784140609784418" />

©Becky Brocato
"Fall Mums"
7" x 7"
Watercolor on Arches 140 CP

This is a watercolor of a mingling of mums, in all the colors of a crisp fall morning! This image, titled Fall Mums, also appears in my set of Floral Seasons note cards in my Etsy shop.

I've also recently started on a new commission of a couple of cute kiddos, a sister and a brother in a little red Radio Flyer wagon. Such a timeless image! It is from a photo taken several years ago by my client. I think they are around 1 and 5 in the image. So fun! I will be posting that when it is complete.

I have been in two Art Shows recently, selling my note cards, prints, bookmarks, small pocket note books, etc. Both shows were successful, and I will be in two more this fall. I am looking forward to meeting and visiting with new people in my community, and sharing information about my art.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-72950803385653158382009-06-29T12:47:00.010-05:002009-06-30T23:01:53.087-05:00In the Garden - Caladium Note cards<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF2jteRfcJnKgodLbTa016zBYEQcRtZVi-dbqLdWg7xxC14ERwsrGIeKtinXZlAwboVHUiJu6pzj9KigPz_289yQswuMU3EJvULTAXy7gk9fp93b70ODex-8ZSuJkwHD_cJRcDDT5ey9gQ/s320/caladiums_allcards_etsy1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352811936861379650" />

I thoroughly enjoyed painting these four varieties of Caladiums: Gingerland, Miss Muffet, White Queen and Red Flash. The fused and blended colors of watercolor fit these lovely garden favorites to a T.

I just listed a set of note cards for purchase on my Etsy shop featuring these four paintings. I'm a bit of a paper snob, so the quality on these are premium: Classic Crest 80 lb Solar White with matching envelopes (not cheap see-through envelopes!). Blank inside for your personal message. They are great as a treat for yourself (everyone needs to send a handwritten note from time to time!) or as a gift for a special someone: teacher, new bride, birthday girl, gardener.Becky Brocatohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10816838985203375662noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8059009365737155882.post-80995856672061414622009-06-22T09:10:00.007-05:002009-10-29T09:11:44.408-05:00"King Me!"<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitcupgagbEkWCQoA9LhBZaiOi-iYP8ZdoPV6m6saKGBTocQ4KvXVL6OAD5Leqr-572ic99Tp7lQzkB3BYbJe0mKt1JdAOmMRCgosoYcTvLIuTazkwa-oRMSYLakNzO5opFXumHwow2JCYy/s320/duncan_tucker_portrait_lores.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5350157063564367634" />

©Becky Brocato
"King Me!"
18.75" x 12.5"
Watercolor on Arches 300 CP

As you may recall, I painted a portrait commission of Lily and her doll a few months back, "Breakfast With 'Nochio."
